Mexican Consulate Opens Artisan’s “Weaving Roots” Textile Exhibition

The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia hosted its latest event to showcase the country’s rich cultural history and traditions. Titled “Weaving Roots”, the exhibition featured the textile work of artisan Avelina Martinez Garcia for an appreciative audience. “Maestra Avelina” is a 4th generation weaver who commented on the history of her art and the importance of maintaining Mexican traditions. The Consulate hosted an enjoyable reception following the presentation.

The Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (CACCI) organized the Young Caribbean Professionals Conference in Wilmington, Delaware. Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) Members Christopher Chaplin, Honorary Consul of Jamaica, and Mary Tang Yew, Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago, joined many other Caribbean diplomats in the dynamic event with panel discussions, presentations and networking.

Mexican Consulate Hosts CCAP Quarterly Members Meeting & Reception with Special PLCB Briefing

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) convened its Second Quarterly Members Meeting and Reception of 2026 at the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia, with several special features. Prior to the usual agenda, CCAP consular members and diplomatic guests received an informative presentation by leadership of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) – the state-owned monopoly on all importation of wine and spirits. The Consular Business Meeting included further instructive remarks from a local importer of wines and spirits. Upcoming FIFA World Cup activity in Philadelphia was another subject of particular interest. The ensuing CCAP Reception was highlighted by the awarding of a Culinary Diplomacy Citation to Philadelphia Magazine Food Editor Kae Lani Palmisano.

Colombian Consul General Engages Philadelphia with Active Official Visit

Maria del Pilar Cruz Silva, Consul General of Colombia in Newark, New Jersey has responsibility for Pennsylvania and paid an official two-day visit to Philadelphia. Her busy schedule included extensive gatherings with Colombia’s significant local community; a tour of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) where she delighted in a warm conversation with medical professionals from her country; and attendance at the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia’s Quarterly Members Meeting. Finally, she was the featured speaker at World Affairs Council’s “Diplochat” program where she discussed Colombia’s important relationship with the United States for an engaged audience.

Italian Flag Raising Ceremony Highlighted by Bandierai Fiorentini Performance at Philadelphia City Hall

The Consulate General of Italy celebrated Italian National Day with a traditional flag raising ceremony at Philadelphia’s City Hall. The program also included national anthems, comments by City officials and Consul General Frandi, and presentation of a Mayoral Proclamation recognizing the importance of Italian culture and heritage to Philadelphia. The celebration was highlighted by the flamboyant performance of the Bandierai Fiorentini – the renowned flag throwers from Florence that reenacted historical military banners and Renaissance acrobatics for this important event.

Philadelphia Consulate General Celebrates Italian National Day at Leonardo Helicopter Complex

June 2 is celebrated as Italy’s national holiday – “Festa della Repubblica” – to commemorate the historic 1946 institutional referendum when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and to establish a democratic republic. Nico Frandi, Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia, convened a festive recognition of Italy’s 80th National Day at the vast manufacturing complex of Leonardo Helicopters in Northeast Philadelphia. Leonardo is an Italian multinational, headquartered in Rome, with operations around the world. The spacious celebration venue accommodated a large Italian-American representation which enjoyed dignitaries’ comments, live renditions of the national anthems, the flamboyant performance by the Bandierai Fiorentini – the renowned flag throwing troupe from Florence – and delicious refreshments.

CCAP/City Convene Philadelphia Emergency Preparedness Tour to Address Special Demands of World Cup

Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and President of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) and Charles Elison, Executive Director, Philadelphia’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, partnered to organize a special tour of Philadelphia’s emergency preparedness capabilities for representatives of countries participating in the World Cup soccer matches in June. The tour included visits to the Philadelphia Fire and Police Departments and the City’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Presentations featured specific health and safety response capabilities and well rehearsed procedures already in place around major sporting events, like the World Cup.

Honorary Consul Toshkezi Awarded Highest Medal by Albania’s President

The Supreme Order of the Eagle is the highest honorary title in the Republic of Albania and is awarded for distinguished civil or military merits, featuring the historical rank of Knight. On April 13, 2026, Dr. Gentian Toshkezi, Honorary Consul of Albania in Philadelphia, was awarded the Knight of the Supreme Order of the Eagle medal by Albania’s President Bajram Begaj in a ceremony covered by the national media at the classic National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble in Tirana, Albania.

Philadelphia International Airport hosted a ceremony to celebrate American Airlines resumption of nonstop service with Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic. Officials and dignitaries provided enthusiastic comments regarding the exciting prospects for tourism and business activity. Cultural entertainment featured song and dance from local Hungarian and Czech community groups. Attendees also enjoyed food, refreshments and souvenir giveaways.

Alex Montanaro, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic, moderated an informative program and reception to celebrate direct flights between Philadelphia and Prague by American Airlines. Speakers included Karel Smékal, Consul General of the Czech Republic in New York; Simon Hawkins, American Airlines’ Managing Director of International Sales; and representatives of Czech Tourism, Czechinvest and a satisfied businessman. All agreed that this air connection will stimulate tourism, business activity and general connectivity between Philadelphia and the Czech Republic. The elegant Union League reception also created a wonderful networking opportunity.

CCAP/Athenaeum’s “Power of Place” Lecture Series Features Indian Temples – Past and Present

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) has partnered with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia to present an International Design Lecture Series titled “Power of Place”. Each month, a guest lecturer provides a different country’s interpretation of this theme. May’s speaker – Dr. Darielle Mason, an art historian and museum curator with over thirty years of experience – was elegantly introduced by Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York. Her presentation – “Bridging a Thousand Years: From Medieval Indian Temples to the Global Diaspora” – introduced an extraordinary range of historic and modern Indian temples, in locations around the globe. The enthusiastic Athenaeum audience enjoyed a pleasant reception following this fascinating talk.

Since his arrival to Philadelphia in mid-2025, Nico Frandi, Consul General of Italy, has organized a series of informative lectures and charming presentations celebrating various aspects of Italian culture. The latest event was co-hosted with the Italian Trade Agency, focused on the “Authentic Italian Aperitivo” and attracted a capacity audience at the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia. As described in opening comments and discussed by a panel of experts, the Aperitivo is designed to stimulate the appetite before a dinner and has become a classic Italian tradition. Iconic cocktails like the Negroni, Bellini and Americano mixed with popular Italian spirits like Aperol, Prosecco and Campari, and light snacks are staples of the “Authentic Italian Aperitivo”.

Spain’s Ambassador to the US Highlights Pan American Day Luncheon

The Pan American Association of Philadelphia celebrated its 2026 Pan American Day and Annual Scholarship Luncheon, which filled Lincoln Hall at the Union League of Philadelphia. In accordance with Pan American Association tradition, scholarships were awarded to seven local university students. The Keynote Speaker was H.E. Ángeles Moreno Bau, Spain’s Ambassador to the United States who explored her country’s historic ties with Latin America and its role in the founding of the U.S. The Pan American Association of Philadelphia is an Associate Member of CCAP and many consuls attended this important event.

Spanish Ambassador Hosts Wreath-Laying Ceremony to Honor First Envoy to U.S.

H.E. Ángeles Moreno Bau, Spain’s Ambassador to the United States, convened a group of dignitaries, military officers and the local diaspora in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Diego de Gardoqui, Spain’s first envoy (1785 – 1789) to the recently-formed United States. National anthems were played, the Ambassador and the Philadelphia Mayor’s representative made comments, a moment of silence was recognized and a floral wreath, featuring Spain’s national colors, was placed at the statue of Gardoqui in Sister Cities Park in Philadelphia. The ritual emphasized Spain’s significant role in the founding of the United States and the timeless importance of diplomacy.

Flemish Bonding

Daisy Van den Hooff-Mertens, First Representative of Philadelphia’s Flemish Community, organized a joyous celebration of her fifteen years in that position and of the United States’ 250th birthday. The event was convened in historic Carpenters’ Hall in the Old City of Philadelphia which, most appropriately, is a classic example of the “Flemish Bond” decorative bricklaying technique that was fashionable in Georgian-style colonial buildings in 18th-century Philadelphia. The Flemish ceremony reflected on the philosophical origins of the United States and on the ongoing importance of people “bonding” with purpose and vision to create friendships, preserve traditions and build bridges between Flanders and the United States.

Jamaican HC Chaplin Speaks at Women’s Business Conference in Nigeria

ImpactHER is a non-profit organization that seeks to empower African female entrepreneurs by providing digital training and resources to bridge the gender gap. Global Africa Women’s Sustainability Conference 2.0 was co-hosted by ImpactHER and the African Union in Abuja, Nigeria. The three-day conference attracted over 1,000 women from across the continent to discuss best business practices, entrepreneurship and access to capital. Christopher Chaplin, Honorary Consul of Jamaica and former CCAP President, joined the distinguished roster of speakers from Africa, the Caribbean and the United States in leading the conference discussion groups with African female business owners.

HC Tanner Organizes Energy Roundtable for King Charles III

As a cornerstone of King Charles III’s historic 2026 State Visit to the United States, Neil Boyden Tanner, His Majesty’s Honorary Consul for the United Kingdom to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, hosted a high-level strategic meeting with leading CEOs from the energy industry. The roundtable was convened at Rockefeller Center in New York City and focused on accelerating the global transition to sustainable energy and strengthening US-UK collaboration on green technology. Mr. Tanner facilitated the dialogue between the King and top executives, highlighting the critical role of private investment in achieving net zero targets. On a personal note, Honorary Consul Tanner and His Majesty enjoyed recollections of their last meeting at the 300th anniversary of the College of William & Mary in 1993.

The American Jewish Committee Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey organized an intimate conversation with AJC’s Chief Policy and Political Affairs Officer, Jason Isaacson, a veteran analyst of international affairs. The program format was directed by Brian Hoffman, Vice Chair of AJC Philadelphia Board, for an audience of largely AJC members, at the Union League of Philadelphia. Hungarian American Coalition Hosts USA250 Gala at Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

The Hungarian American Coalition hosted the USA250 Gala at the Library of Congress, bringing together over 400 distinguished leaders and supporters to celebrate the enduring contributions of Hungarian Americans in the United States. The ceremony honored Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Katalin Karikó and pioneering software architect Dr. Charles Simonyi. Edith Schwartz, Honorary Consul of Hungary in Philadelphia, and her husband Alex enjoyed the exciting black tie event that included speeches, exhibitions, videos, musical performances, award presentations, toasts and a delicious dinner with select Hungarian wines.

CCAP Legacy Alliance Rules in Penn State Classroom

In 2025, Andrea Canepari – former Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia and Italy’s Ambassador to the Dominican Republic – assumed important teaching duties at Penn State School of International Affairs and Penn State Dickinson School of Law. In a charming collaboration between former diplomatic colleagues and CCAP Legacy Members, Ambassador Canepari has teamed with guest lecturer Michael Scullin, past Honorary Consul of France and international business lawyer (McElroy Deutsch), in a class titled “From the Courtroom to the Consulate: Building Strategic Bridges Between America and France”. Scullin’s lecture was followed by a discussion of comparative law and public diplomacy led by Ambassador Canepari.

Jamaica Shines in 130th Penn Relays

The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, hosted annually since 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. While international participation has grown over the years, only Jamaica has demonstrated individual and team performances that challenge the U.S. athletes at all levels. Since 1964, Jamaica’s success on the track has transformed the Penn Relays itself into a wonderful promotion of Brand Jamaica – a festival which attracts a third of total attendees, visiting government officials, sponsors and trade missions.

Trinidad & Tobago Consulate General Hosts Reception to Honor Penn Relays Athletes

The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. Presented each April in the University of Pennsylvania’s historic Franklin Field stadium, the three day event attracts top high school, collegiate and professional athletes and over 100,000 spectators. International participation now includes high school teams from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. To honor their country’s 2026 Penn Relay competitors, the Consulate General of Trinidad and Tobago in New York hosted a reception at the Festival Restaurant in Philadelphia.

Hungary Prepares for Resumption of Direct Flight Service between Philadelphia and Budapest

Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s Ambassador to the U.S., and his wife Emese traveled to Philadelphia, with a focus on airport preparations for the May 21 inaugural flight from Philadelphia to Budapest. A small Hungarian delegation spent the following day touring Philadelphia’s historic sites in recognition of the city’s important role in founding the U.S. As always, Edith Schwartz, Honorary Consul of Hungary, was a gracious, informative host for both groups.

Four days of dynamic programming focused on trade, investment and international collaboration. Featured moments included the Closing Gala, main stage sessions with an impressive roster of distinguished speakers and ample opportunities to connect and network with other international leaders.

CCAP Representatives Meet with Haitian Ambassador to Discuss Plans for World Cup Match in Philadelphia

At the invitation of Lionel Delatour, Haiti’s Ambassador to the U.S., Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and CCAP President, and Peter Longstreth, Honorary Consul of Uruguay, traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet at the Embassy. The subjects of discussion were Haiti’s soccer match with Brazil in Philadelphia on June 19, as part of the FIFA World Cup tournament, and ways that CCAP can assist in making this important sporting event safe and memorable for visiting dignitaries and the significant Haitian diaspora in Philadelphia.

CCAP Organizes Philadelphia Dignitary Welcome Team Presentation to DC Consular Corps Members

In recognition of Philadelphia’s central role in the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, and the increased number of dignitary visit requests that have already been received this year, Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and President of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) organized a Dignitary Welcome Team of prominent Philadelphians to highlight the city’s exciting opportunities to an audience of engaged counterparts from the Washington, D.C. Consular Corps. CCAP has also prepared a Dignitary Welcome Team Directory, the first of its kind, with over 100 direct VIP contacts at premiere Philadelphia institutions to make it easier for CCAP Consular Members and the diplomatic community to connect with the people who help roll out Philadelphia’s red carpet for its global visitors. This collaborative event reflected the teamwork between these two prominent consular organizations and underscores Philadelphia’s moniker as a truly welcoming city.

Netherlands Royal Couple Celebrate U.S. 250th with a Visit to Philadelphia

Philadelphia rolled out the red carpet for King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Kingdom of the Netherlands during their diplomatic visit to our city, as part of a three-day trip to recognize the U.S. 250th anniversary. Governor Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania’s First Lady Lori Shapiro hosted the Royal Couple on a tour of Philadelphia’s historic sites and Mayor Cherelle Parker led a visit with students at a local high school. A business roundtable and a reception with over 200 guests included remarks by the King and the Governor and signing of a letter of understanding to strengthen economic cooperation between Pennsylvania and the Netherlands.

Italian Lecture Series Features Age of Enlightenment Leader Cesare Beccaria

In celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday, the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia has organized a lecture series which explores Italian influences on the founding of America. The fourth event in the program was held at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia and included a lecture by John Bessler, Professor, University of Baltimore, regarding Cesare Beccaria (1738 1794) – an economist, politician and thought leader during the Italian Enlightenment. Professor Bessler focused much of his commentary on Beccaria’s treatise “On Crimes and Punishments” (1764) which profoundly influenced penal policy and criminology in Europe and the United States.

CCAP Supports Global Interdependence Center’s 50th Anniversary Gala and Award Ceremony

The Global Interdependence Center hosted a Gala to celebrate its 50th Anniversary at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The festive evening included a cocktail reception, dinner and the presentation of GIC’s Alexander Hamilton Leadership Award to Bill Dudley, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. GIC is an Associate Member of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia and many CCAP members attended this exciting event.

American Philosophical Society Opens Exhibition of Early “Declaration” Printings

The American Philosophical Society hosted a reception to open its 2026 exhibition titled “These Truths: The Declarations of Independence”, featuring 19 first and early printings of the Declaration. Among the highlights is Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten draft and the only known oversized Dunlap printing. Following brief remarks by Patrick Spero, APS CEO, guests enjoyed conversations with the curators, refreshments and relaxed viewing of the stunning documents themselves. APS is a CCAP Associate Member.

As part of the World Cup buildup, Philadelphia Soccer 2026 partnered with Brauhaus Schmitz, a German restaurant in Philadelphia, for a celebratory Happy Hour highlighting teams from France and Croatia. Members of those respective communities and CCAP representatives enjoyed a fun-filled evening with a delicious buffet, lots of soccer talk and plans on how to best enjoy this world class competition.

Consuls Bard and Lubert Meet with Lithuanian Ambassador in Washington, D.C.

Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania in Pennsylvania and CCAP President, and her colleague Ira Lubert, Honorary Consul of Lithuania in New Jersey, traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Gediminas Varvuolis, Lithuania’s Ambassador to the U.S. at the Embassy. Their conversations reviewed matters of general diplomatic concern and focused on strategies for Lithuanian businesses to more effectively penetrate the U.S. markets.

CCAP Members Attend Congressman Fitzpatrick’s “One Community International Alliance” Celebration

Brian Fitzpatrick, U.S Representative from Pennsylvania’s First District, hosted the first gathering of the “One Community International Alliance”, an organization that recognizes the importance of international connections in the local community. The reception occurred in the former home of author Pearl S. Buck, now a museum to preserve her legacy, which included many years in China with her missionary parents. Attendance at the event included a diverse group of residents in Congressman Fitzpatrick’s district and several members of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP).

Mexican Consulate Hosts Lecture on Patriot Priest

The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia hosted a lecture in Spanish by Rafael Toriz, a prominent Mexican historian, regarding Fray Jose Servando Teresa de Mier (1765-1827) – a colorful figure in Mexico’s independence. Mier was born in Mexico where he was ordained as a Dominican priest, but spent much of his life in exile in Europe and the United States where he absorbed many political philosophies. His time in Philadelphia (1821-22) was particularly significant as he enjoyed the freedom to openly publish some of his most effective anti-monarchical tracts that contributed to Mexico’s eventual independence from Spain.

Life and Legacy of Swiss Diplomat Carl Lutz Honored at Ceremony in Philadelphia

The Mid-Atlantic – Eurasia Business Council has hosted another commemoration event to honor Carl Lutz, Swiss diplomat and his heroic rescue efforts during the Holocaust. Lutz was Swiss Vice-Consul in Philadelphia and later in Budapest where he is credited with saving more than 60,000 lives during the 1940s. The event was held at the Arch Street Quaker Meeting House where a related photographic exhibition titled “Visas for Life: The Righteous and Honorable Diplomats” has been on display for several months.

Ghana President Receives WAC’s International Statesperson Award at Luncheon Ceremony

The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia (WAC) and the U.S.-Ghana Chamber of Commerce partnered to present WAC’s International Statesperson Award to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama in a vibrant ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia. The program opened with remarks by Lauren Swartz, WAC’s President and CEO and Honorary Consul of Sweden, and by Florence Torson-Hart, President of the U.S.-Ghana Chamber Commerce. Swartz then presented the award to President Mahama for his extraordinary contributions to democratic governance, regional stability and global engagement. His remarks were followed by a more informal “Fireside Chat” with Swartz and the event concluded with the Philadelphia Boys Choir’s rousing rendition of a popular Ghanaian song.

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) has partnered with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia to offer an International Design Lecture Series, as each month a guest lecturer will provide a different country’s interpretation of this theme. Rafael Toriz, a prominent Mexican essayist, curator and historian, addressed the Athenaeum audience with a talk titled “Obsidian Mirrors: Magical Elements in Modern Mexico” which highlighted the work of several important Mexican artists and emphasized their use of magical imagery as a central quality in their surrealist art. A lively reception concluded the evening’s stimulating program.

Jamaica HC Chaplin Addresses Team Jamaica Bickle’s 2026 Campaign Launch in New York

Since 1996, Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB), a New York-based, not-for-profit corporation, has provided hospitality services to Jamaican and Caribbean athletes who compete at the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Each year, over 600 student-athletes, coaches and volunteers travel to Philadelphia from Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. To kick off TJB’s 2026 Campaign, the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York hosted a celebration and Christopher Chaplin, Honorary Consul of Jamaica in Philadelphia, was a featured speaker.

HCG Bard Briefs Lithuanian Defense Officials on U.S. Diasporan Security

During her recent visit to Vilnius, Lithuania, Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and President of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP), met with officials at the Ministry of Defense where she briefed them on American diasporan security plans. The discussion considered U.S. and international communications, advocacy, humanitarian aid and media relations as critical foundations to Lithuanian security and crisis readiness.

HC Wiedemann Attends Consular Conference at German Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The German Ambassador to the United States Jens Hanefeld and the Embassy team in Washington, D.C. hosted a Consular Conference for Germany’s 30 Honorary Consuls and eight Consuls General from around the U.S. The busy agenda included meetings, presentations and dinners with Embassy staff. Participants also enjoyed sharing common experiences and discussing best practices with consular colleagues.

HC Bell Welcomes Spanish Students and Teachers in High School Youth Exchange Program Ceremony

Madeline Bell, Honorary Consul of Spain, and Diego Blazquez Martin, Education Attaché at Spain’s Consulate General in New York, attended a ceremony at Philadelphia’s City Hall as part of World Affairs Council’s High School Youth Exchange Program. The event connected students from the local Science Leadership Academy Center City to visiting students and teachers from the Miguel Catalan High School in Zaragoza, Spain with a program that is designed to build young people’s intercultural competence.

Virtual Lecture Highlights Italian Influence on Declaration of Independence

In celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday, the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia has organized a series of lectures which explore Italian influences on the founding of America. The initial program, titled “Happiness as the Supreme Law: Gaetano Filangieri and the Declaration of Independence at the 250 Year Mark”, was hosted by Consul General Nico Frandi at the Museum of the American Revolution where Professor Amedeo Arena, lectured virtually from Universita Federico II in Naples, Italy. Filangieri was an 18th century Italian jurist and political philosopher, who developed a close correspondent friendship with Benjamin Franklin and influenced the thoughts expressed in the Declaration of independence. Many of the original Filangieri-Franklin letters are archived at the American Philosophy Society and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Hong Kong-Philadelphia Business Forum and Spring Reception Presented at the Science History Institute

The Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, New York (HKETONY), Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Invest Hong Kong hosted a Business Forum titled “Bridging Hong Kong and Philadelphia: Unlocking Life Sciences and Investment Opportunities” at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia. Presentations by the Hong Kong representatives were complimented by a panel of industry experts in exploring the strategic advantages of Hong Kong as a gateway to Asian markets. Following the forum, a Spring Reception celebrated the Chinese New Year with an evening of delicious refreshments and high-powered networking. HKETONY is a Member of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia.

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia’s Speaker Series hosted a program titled “Philly Unfiltered: Immigration” – an in-depth discussion among local experts regarding the impacts of national immigration policies on Philadelphia. Speakers Charlie Elison, ED of the City’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and Anuj Gupta, President & CEO of the Welcoming Center, provided detailed commentary on the importance of the immigrant community to Philadelphia’s economy and the challenges created by the current administration in Washington.

Lithuania Celebrates 36 Years of Independence with Philadelphia City Hall Flag Raising

On March 11, 1990, Lithuania became the first country to declare independence from the Soviet Union, an historic milestone that was honored by the Lithuanian American community with a flag raising ceremony at Philadelphia City Hall. Father Dennis Gill opened the celebration with a blessing, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry served as Honor Guard and KYW Newsradio’s Rasa Kaye and Andrew Salciunas emceed the program. Brigadier General Frank McGovern of the Pennsylvania National Guard was keynote speaker, noting his unit’s long standing partnership with Lithuania. Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and CCAP President, and Lithuanian community leaders were then presented with Mayoral and City Council Proclamations. A reception followed at the Union League of Philadelphia.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the British American Business Council (BABC) and the World Trade Center (WTC) of Greater Philadelphia hosted a breakfast roundtable that convened leading women from Philadelphia’s international business community. The moderated discussion focused on Philadelphia’s place in the global economy, leadership and womanhood. The spirit of the morning was collaborative as participants shared reflections on their paths into the world of international business.

Philadelphia’s Lithuanian Community Celebrates Independence with Awards Ceremony

Philadelphia’s Lithuanian community members celebrated the country’s independence day with an awards ceremony at the Lithuanian Music Hall. Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania – wearing her father’s Lithuanian army cavalry unit jacket to honor his service in both World Wars – presented awards to recognize outstanding cultural and educational achievements by Lithuanians in Philadelphia, on a stage decorated with an art installation of “heart strings” in the Lithuanian flag’s three bands of color – yellow for the sun, green for the land, and red for blood spilt for freedom.

Ukrainian Ambassador Honored at World Affairs Council Reception in Philadelphia

The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia hosted a morning reception to honor Olga Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States. Following introductions by Lauren Swartz, WAC’s President & CEO, and Iryna Mazur, Honorary Consul of Ukraine, Ambassador Stefanishyna delivered remarks of appreciation and inspiration regarding her country’s heroic resistance to Russian aggression. The formal program concluded with CCAP President Krista Bard’s presentation of a symbolic solidarity gift to the Ambassador. The event was well attended by WAC Members, diplomats and Ukraine supporters who appreciated the personal contact with Ambassador Stefanishyna.

Norwegian Delegation Visits Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

A business and civic delegation from Kristiansand, Norway, and its surrounding Agder region, visited Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. for several days. The group was headed by Kristiansand Mayor Mathias Bernander and Geir Hammersmark, Director of “Invest in Agder”, and included Jo Sletbak, Norway’s Consul General in New York. The Philadelphia program was organized by Susan Satkowski, Honorary Consul, and included a reception hosted by Philadelphia’s Commerce Department, tours with the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University and working meetings with prospective investors. The Washington agenda culminated with a wonderful brunch at the Embassy with Hon. Anniken Huitfeldt, Norway’s Ambassador to the U.S.

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) convened its first Quarterly Members Meeting & Reception at the Pyramid Club in Philadelphia. The program opened with a Special Briefing titled “Current Immigration Policies Impacting FIFA, Summer Travel and Post-Graduation Hiring” presented by Jonathan Grode and Ian Hopper of Green & Spiegel, LLC. The busy association business agenda culminated with comments by the Philadelphia Dignitary Protection Team: Robert Jones, FBI; Paul Houseknecht, U.S. State Department; and Manuel Lorenzo, Philadelphia Police Department. A delightful reception followed for members and guests who enjoyed the networking and the Pyramid Club’s extraordinary views of Center City Philadelphia.

The Pan American Association of Philadelphia (PAAP) hosted a dynamic breakfast round-table discussion titled “Venezuela after Maduro: A New Paradigm of the US Foreign Policy” at the Union League of Philadelphia. The program featured panelists Carrie Filipetti and Eric Farnsworth, two former U.S. State Department officials with significant Venezuela experience, who responded to penetrating questions posed by Ruben Reyes, PAAP President, and from the audience. In summary, they opined that the ultimate objective of US policies should be a return to democracy in Venezuela.

Honorary Consulate of Ukraine and In Unity UA Organize Rally and March to Support War Effort

The Honorary Consul of Ukraine and In Unity UA organized a rally at the Philadelphia Art Museum and a march to Philadelphia City Hall in support of the Ukraine’s fight for freedom, four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Led by Iryna Mazur, Honorary Consul of Ukraine, the program’s speakers stirred the large crowd with comments demanding greater commitment to the war effort and honoring those who have sacrificed everything in their fight for national survival.

Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia Hosts “Reading the Maya Past” Lecture and Photographic Exhibition

The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia hosted an event titled “Reading the Maya Past: How Deciphering Maya Hieroglyphs Unlocked History”. Following introductions by Consulate leadership and comments by archaeologist Dr. Nelda Camacho, Dr. Simon Martin, prominent British epigrapher and political anthropologist at the Penn Museum, provided a fascinating lecture on Mayan hieroglyphic writing with a focus on the ruins of Coba in Mexico. A reception also featured photographs highlighting the Mayan culture and its magnificent archaeology in Mexico and Central America.

Philadelphia CG Hosts “Italian Design Day” Celebration at Simeone Automotive Museum

“Italian Design Day” is an annual global initiative launched in 2017 by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote the excellence, innovation and sustainability of Italian Design. Nico Frandi, Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia, hosted a celebration of Italian design in the car industry at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum which houses one of the world’s greatest collections of racing sports cars, many with iconic Italian names. The program included a tour of over 60 rare and significant race cars, lectures on Italian auto design and an enjoyable reception for many members of Philadelphia’s robust Italian community.

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) has partnered with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia to create an International Design Lecture Series titled “Power of Place”. Each month a guest lecturer will represent a different country’s interpretation of this theme. Román Viñoly’s presentation “Designing the Place: Architecture that Transforms Uruguay’s Identity and Landscape” focused on four very different projects in that country that reconcile modern demands with regional context, cultural tradition and ecological responsibilities. Following Viñoly’s stimulating remarks, members of CCAP and the Athenaeum and guests enjoyed a lively reception.

Morikawa Retirement Ceremony and Reception Hosted by Japanese Consul General

After 26 years as Honorary Consul of Japan in Philadelphia, Dennis Morikawa, Esq. retired in an emotional ceremony hosted by the Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consul General of Japan in New York, at the Union League of Philadelphia. Ambassador Katahira and other speakers recognized Morikawa’s valuable service to Japan and Philadelphia. The official appointment letter from Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs was presented to Pat Dailey, the incoming Honorary Consul and Dennis delivered a touching farewell with recollections of many satisfying achievements.

Co-Hosted by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Department of Community & Economic Development, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the busy agenda included speeches by Ambassador Satoshi Katahira, Consul General of Japan in New York and a variety of government officials and business leaders. An interactive panel discussion with Q & A from the audience concluded the event.

The West Indian Student Establishment (WISE) is a student-led organization at Drexel University which is designed to socially, academically and culturally unite students of Caribbean heritage. Each year WISE hosts the Bob Marley Gala Dinner which attracts attendees from throughout Philadelphia’s English, Dutch, French and Spanish speaking Caribbean communities. Cuisine, entertainment and live music made this another successful evening for WISE and its guests.

The Philadelphia Orchestra and the China National Tourist Office of New York hosted an exhilarating Lunar New Year Concert for a sold-out audience at the magnificent Marian Anderson Hall of the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Conducted by the dynamic Naomi Woo, an exquisite program combined traditional works to celebrate springtime with unique performances by virtuosos Yu Hongmei (erhu) and Zhang Hongyan (pipa). The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China and The Philadelphia Orchestra are members of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP).

CCAP and ACBC Leadership Explore Cooperation

Krista Bard, Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) President and Lithuanian Honorary Consul General met with Azuka Anyiam, President of the African Caribbean Business Council (ACBC) to discuss how the two organizations might work more closely together. Many African nations are already members of both organizations, and already work closely on economic development projects, forums and delegations. Holt Logistics and Philaport Host Delegation of Agriculture Attaches to Philadelphia Port Tour

Holt Logistics Corp., Philadelphia’s primary port operator, and Philaport, the PA State owner of Philadelphia’s port facilities, co-hosted an all-day tour for a delegation of agriculture attaches from seventeen embassies, representing countries from around the world. Overview presentations by Holt and Philaport’s Dominic O’Brien were followed by visits to Philadelphia’s Packer Avenue and SouthPort Terminals, a meeting with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials and a luncheon hosted by Lineage Logistics, a freezer warehouse operation. Holt Logistics is an Associate Member of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP).

Jonathan Grode Appointed Honorary Consul for Fiji

Jonathan A. Grode, Esq., Managing Partner of Green and Spiegel, a prominent immigration law firm in Philadelphia, was recently appointed Honorary Consul for the Republic of Fiji. While Jonathan went through the usual consular selection process, his profound experience in Fiji during the formative period of his youth, no doubt, played a role in his ultimate appointment. In 2003, Jonathan spent four months in the small towns and villages of Fiji, living the culture which would condition his approach to the consular role that he has recently assumed. In his words: “he is here to help the Fijian community in the United States in the same way that the community helped him in Fiji” many years ago.

The Embassy of Ghana in the U.S. hosted a forum titled “Exploring and Exploiting Golden Opportunities in Ghana and Pennsylvania” at the law offices of Greenberg Traurig in Center City Philadelphia. The event was organized by the US-Ghana Chamber of Commerce and attracted an enthusiastic audience which received a dynamic presentation regarding investment opportunities in Ghana. Ambassador Smith provided keynote comments which highlighted his country’s natural resources, stable democracy, qualified workforce, solid infrastructure and economic incentives. Krista Bard, Honorary Consul General of Lithuania and CCAP President, provided welcoming remarks to the Ghana delegation.

CCAP Members Gather in Harrisburg for the 110th Annual PA Farm Show

In what has become another exciting CCAP tradition, Members from Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. assembled in Harrisburg for the 110th Pennsylvania Farm Show – the nation’s largest indoor agricultural exposition. The group enjoyed the Show’s incredible scale and variety, which aptly celebrates Pennsylvania’s $132.5 billion farming industry. The busy day also included a luncheon hosted by the PA Chamber of Business and Industry and the PA International Delegation Partnerships Forum and Reception, hosted by Russell Redding, Secretary of Agriculture, and other state officials.
