About

Hon. Capri S Cafaro spent a decade in public service as a member of the Ohio Senate. Prior to being term limited in 2016, Senator Cafaro was elected by her peers to serve as the Minority Leader of the Ohio Senate, a position she held for 3 years. During her term as Leader, Cafaro was on the front lines of some of the toughest budget negotiations Ohio had seen in decades due to the national economic crisis at the time. Cafaro has passed numerous bills into law, focusing her efforts on economic development, transportation and logistics infrastructure, health care and victim’s rights. She authored the law that created Ohio’s Development Service Agency and its tourism bureau, TourismOhio, Ohio’s Medicaid reform law and the law that establishes the protocol to clear the rape kit backlog in Ohio. Cafaro was also involved in national state legislative organizations including serving as a vice chair of the Transportation Committee of the National Association of State Legislators and as a member of the U.S.-Canadian Relations Committee in the Council of State Governments.

After her time in office, Cafaro brought her health policy expertise to academia as an Executive in Residence at American University in Washington DC where she has taught a variety of social policy related courses. She also held visiting fellowships at the London School of Economics and the University of Toronto.

Over the last several years, Cafaro has focused her professional efforts in the media field. She spent five years providing political analysis on national cable news outlets in the United States as well as television networks abroad. Currently, Cafaro is a cultural reporter and journalist. She hosts Eat Your Heartland Out, a program on SiriusXM Radio about the intersection of food and culture in the American Midwest. Capri also contributes to Great Lakes Now from Detroit Public Television and Inside Appalachia from West Virginia Public Radio.

Prior to her service in the Ohio Senate, Cafaro worked with several non-profit and advocacy agencies focusing on the needs of older adults including The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and Global Action on Aging, an NGO with consultative status at the United Nations.

Cafaro graduated from Stanford University at age 19 with a degree in American Studies, and earned two masters degrees: an MALS with a concentration in International Studies from Georgetown University, and a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) from The Ohio State University.
