CCAP Quarterly Members Meeting and Cocktail Reception
The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia hosted its First Quarterly Members Meeting of 2017 on March 21 at the Kimpton Palomar Hotel in Center City Philadelphia. Membership participation was outstanding, distinguished by six attendees from New York and Washington, D.C.
Association business included approval of the Minutes from the December 8, 2016 Meeting and a review of membership growth, the calendar of upcoming events, the financial summary and other activities. On behalf of all CCAP Members, Ralf Wiedemann, Honorary Consul of Germany, presented a Resolution of recognition and appreciation to E.Harris Baum for his ten years of loyal service as Honorary Consul General for the Republic of Korea and as an active Member of CCAP.
The Members Meeting was followed by a Cocktail Reception, with Associate Members and guests in attendance. Sponsors included Customers Bank, Parkway Corporation and Fineman, Krekstein & Harris P.C. Rabbi Andrew Baker, Director of International Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Committee(AJC) addressed the group with stimulating comments, titled “Safeguarding Europe for All Peoples – The Role of Government and Multilateral Initiatives”. CCAP’s Second Quarterly Members Meeting and Cocktail Reception will occur in June with date, location and speaker to be announced.

New CCAP Member – General Delegate of Flanders to U.S.
Geert De Proost, General Delegate of the Government of Flanders to the United States, has become CCAP’s newest Member. With offices in Flanders House, New York, General Delegate De Proost will work closely with Daisy Van den Hooff-Mertens, Representative of Flemings in the World for the Philadelphia region and an established CCAP Member.
General Delegate De Proost is an experienced diplomat who started his career at the Belgian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the United Nations Department. He holds a Masters of Law at the KU Leuven and a Certificate of International and European Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Prior to assuming his current responsibilities in 2014, Geert was Representative to the United Kingdom and to the European Union with offices in London.

CCAP Meets with Diplomatic Security Team
CCAP Members participated in an interactive, informative meeting with representatives of Philadelphia’s Diplomatic Security Team. Michael Davies, Resident Agent in Charge, and Brendan Hobson, Special Agent, described the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Services. Captain Michael Root, Lieutenant James Dambach and Police Officer Brian Leventhal provided detailed comments on the Philadelphia Police Department’s complimentary capabilities. Most importantly, the group established personal connections which will serve CCAP well in the future.

4th Quarterly Members Meeting
Thanks to the generosity of Steve Jannetta, Honorary Consul of Belgium and Partner at Morgan Lewis, CCAP’s 4th Quarterly Members Meeting was held at the prominent law firm’s Center City offices.
The Business agenda included approval of Minutes from the September 26 Members Meeting, re-election of the current Executive Committee for 2017 and a review of 2016 activities and financial condition. The Members then reviewed, considered and approved with minor adjustments Plans, Policies and an Operating Budget for 2017.
A Resolution of recognition and appreciation was also presented to Vitaliano Gallardo, Consul General of Peru, who will be relocating to Lima in February, 2017.

Ambassador Das, CG of India in New York, Joins CCAP
Ambassador Riva Ganguly Das, Consul General of India in New York, has joined the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia. Ambassador Das is a Post Graduate in Political Science from Delhi University and an experienced diplomat who started her distinguished career with the Indian Foreign Service in 1986.
Her diverse experiences include foreign postings in Spain, Bangladesh, The Hague and China and a variety of positions within India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Prior to her appointment as Consul General in March, 2016, she was India’s Ambassador to Romania, Albania and Moldova with residence in Bucharest.
India’s Consulate General in New York serves a large community in ten states, including Pennsylvania. Membership in CCAP will provide Ambassador Das with improved connections to international activities in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and the surrounding region.

CCAP Funds Earthquake Relief to Italy
An earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale struck Central Italy on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 and devastated the region causing hundreds of deaths and injuries, while destroying buildings and infrastructure. Earthquake relief has been mobilized on a global scale (https://www.unaiutosubito.org/en/terremotocentroitalia2016) and, with guidance from the Consulate General in Philadelphia, CCAP has contributed to a fundraising effort by several non-profits in Italy. Other Philadelphians are encouraged to do the same.

Perry World House Hosts CCAP
The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia held its Third Quarterly Members Meeting and Cocktail Reception at the Perry World House (PWH) on the University oy Pennsylvania campus. A well-attended meeting addressed a full agenda of association business and was followed by a PWH-hosted cocktail reception for approximately 100 Members, guests and students. Perry World House (https://global.upenn.edu/perryworldhouse) is Penn’s recently-opened global research center. Dynamic speakers included Bill Burke-White, Director of PWH; Pedro Cortes, Pennsylvania’s Secretary of State; and Andrea Canepari, Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia.

Italy in Harrisburg
On June 6, Consul General of Italy Andrea Canepari visited Harrisburg invited by the Pennsylvania Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Turzai. They discussed political, academic, business and trade opportunities between Italy and Pennsylvania.

Second Quarterly Members Meeting & Cocktail Reception
The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia held its Second Quarterly Members Meeting at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Center City Philadelphia. A full agenda of association business was highlighted by the election of Andrea Canepari, Consul General of Italy, as Vice President of CCAP’s Executive Committee and farewell ceremonies for Mexican Consul Carlos Giralt-Cabrales and Israeli Consul General Yaron Sideman, who are departing for new postings in China and Israel, respectively. Following the meeting, CCAP hosted a Cocktail Reception where Jerry Sweeney, Board Chairman of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, provided comments regarding port plans and activities to Members and guests. Kimpton Hotel Monaco was host sponsor for the event which included the seven other Sponsors indicated below.

HC Rafaeli and Wife Attend Memorial Celebration for Hero Winton
Peter Rafaeli, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Philadelphia, and his wife, Naomi, attended a two day memorial service and concert in London, celebrating the life of Sir Nicholas Winton who died at the age of 106 on July 1, 2015. In 1938-39, Sir Nicholas was the savior of 669 Czech children whom he brought to England before the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. HC Rafaeli, who lived the Czech-WWII experience himself, befriended Sir Nicholas years later and has played a major role in the general recognition of Winton’s heroic acts.

City and Select Host Mayor of Sintra, Portugal to a Reception with Business Leaders
City Commerce Director, Harold Epps, and Select Greater Philadelphia’s Matt Cabrey hosted a breakfast reception for Basilio Horta, Mayor of Sintra, Portugal at the law offices of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young. Mayor Horta was accompanied by Rui Boavista Marques, Commissioner of the Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency, and other staff members.
Portugal’s local representative and Member of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia , Joseph Fernandes, was an active participant in discussions with business leaders regarding potential cooperation between Sintra and Philadelphia. Judge Fernandes, a former Honorary Consul of Portugal in Philadelphia, is now the country’s Advisor on Cultural and Educational Affairs following his election to the Court of Common Pleas.
Mayor Horta and Commerce Director Epps provided presentations on their respective cities and the event concluded with a round table discussion involving most of the attendees. Mayor Horta and his delegation visited The Navy Yard later in the day.

Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia Members Meeting
On February 24, 2016, the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) held its first Members Meeting of the year followed by a Cocktail Reception at the Rittenhouse Hotel. Over 20 Members attended the business session from 4:30 – 5:30 which covered a full agenda. CCAP now represents 40 countries and our newest Members, Donnie Jack , Scottish Affairs Counsellor for the Americas at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Eli Gabay, Honorary Consul of Nicaragua, were in attendance. The Cocktail Reception from 5:30 – 7:00 included two dynamic speakers – Rob Wonderling, President of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and Harold T. Epps, Director of Commerce for the City of Philadelphia – and about 35 guests. The host sponsor was Hersha Hospitality Trust, owner of the Rittenhouse Hotel, and Silver Sponsors included Cozen O’Connor, Dan and Monica DiLella and Electronic Ink. CCAP will hold three other quarterly events throughout the year.

Dennis Morikawa receives The Order of the Rising Sun
On January 28, 2016, Ambassador Reiichiro Takahashi, Consul General of Japan in New York, hosted a ceremony at The Union League of Philadelphia to celebrate the bestowal of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon upon Dennis Morikawa. Among the highest honors awarded by the Japanese government, the Order of the Rising Sun celebrates achievements in international relations, promotion of Japanese culture and advancement in one’s profession.
Mr. Morikawa, who serves as Senior Counsel at Morgan Lewis & Bockius, was recognized for his legal and community service with Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans. Mr. Morikawa is also the Honorary Consul of Japan in Philadelphia and a number of his consular colleagues joined many family members and friends at this prestigious event.

Consular Corps Supports Penn’s Think Tank Index Launch
On January 28, 2016, twenty-one representatives of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) attended an event titled “Global Cities as Centers of Commerce, Education and Policy: The Philadelphia Story” hosted by the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. James G. McGann, Director of Penn’s “Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program” and Editor of the “Global Go To Think Tank Index”, organized similar events in Washington, D.C. (World Bank, Wilson Center) and New York City (United Nations). The 2015 Index also celebrated its 9th birthday with simultaneous launches in 70 other “idea capitals” around the world. The Philadelphia agenda included a welcome by Mauro Guillen, Director, Lauder Institute, overview by Dr. McGann, comments by Amy Gadsden, Executive Director of Penn Global, and a panel discussion. CCAP President Peter S. Longstreth was a panelist and consular Members participated actively in the discourse.

AJC’s January 22, 2016 Holocaust Commemoration Program featured Barbara Winton, thanks to Peter A. Rafaeli, Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic
CCAP colleague Peter A. Rafaeli, Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic, played a pivotal role in organizing the American Jewish Committee’s Holocaust Commemoration Program on January 22 which focused on the life of Sir Nicholas Winton, a young Englishman who heroically saved hundreds of Czech children from the Holocaust in the late 1930s.
AJC’s speaker was Barbara Winton, Sir Nicholas’ daughter, who has written a book titled “If It’s Not Impossible…The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton” and her presentation provided moving detail to his remarkable story. Honorary Consul General Rafaeli lived the Czech-World War II experience and befriended Sir Nicholas many years later. He introduced Barbara Winton to AJC for this memorable program. Several CCAP Members were in attendance.

The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia Presents a Major Contribution to William Bodine HS for International Affairs
Krista Butvydas Bard, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
In 2012 the Lithuanian government signed a memorandum of understanding with the PRPA pairing the port of Philadelphia and the port of Klaipeda. This MOU was facilitated by Honorary Consul of Lithuania Krista Butvydas Bard.
